How to Make Your Own Shampoo With Essential Oils
Many people are interested in natural living. This involves using products that do not contain harmful or caustic chemicals. Many of our everyday cleaning and personal beauty products contain dangerous chemicals that may cause cancer or chronic illnesses down the line. To avoid this, more and more people are looking for natural alternatives.
One of the most commonly used products is shampoo. Many people wash their hair everyday and repeated exposure to harmful chemicals may pose a risk in the future. Other individuals simply enjoy the use of essential oils and want to use them every chance that they can. For individuals interested in making their own shampoo with essential oils, there is a recipe below.
- 1 liter of water
- 4 drops of the essential oil of rosemary
- 2 tsp soapwort roots
- 2 tsp rosemary
You will need to place the soapwort and rosemary in a pan with 1 liter of water. Let the water come to a boil, then let it to simmer for 20 minutes. Let the mixture cool and then strain it. Add the 4 drops of essential oil. You will need about a cup every time that you wash your hair. Store the rest of the shampoo in the refrigerator. It will last for about a week. You can store it in the freezer if you need to keep it longer.
When you make shampoo with essential oils, it is important to note that it won't have as much lathering power as store brought shampoos do. This is because the shampoos that you purchase at the store have sudsing agents. Your homemade shampoo is also likely to be a lot thinner then commercial ones.
Another option is using essential oils in the shampoos that you already have. Feel free to experiment. Lavender has a nice smell and it can be calming. On the other hand, peppermint essential oil, as well as citrus oil, will help to invigorate the scalp. You may want to dilute the oils with a tsp of rubbing alcohol before you add it to the mixture.
Essential oils can be used in homemade shampoo recipes. They are also a good addition to store brought shampoos. Adding your favorite essential oil can help individuals benefit from either the calming or invigorating effects of the oils. Adding about 4 drops of the essential oil or oils of your choice, should be plenty to either make your own or add to you what you already own.
